Preconference Course (Thursday) - Simulation: A Teaching Technique
Simulation is a powerful instructional strategy that deepens conceptual understanding, builds psychomotor proficiency, strengthens clinical judgment, and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. The efficacy of simulation is strengthened through intentional, evidence-based design and implementation. This session will establish a shared definition of simulation, explore its role in EMS education as both a formative learning tool and a summative assessment method, and address key design considerations, including fidelity selection and structured debriefing. Participants will leave with practical frameworks and ready-to-use tools for integrating simulation into their programs.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define simulation.
- Distinguish simulation-based education from other experiential learning strategies.
- Compare the use of simulation as a formative teaching technique versus a summative assessment method.
- Differentiate between levels of fidelity.
- Select the appropriate level of fidelity based on learning objectives.
- Explain the role of structured debriefing in promoting reflective practice and clinical reasoning.
- Design a simulation event aligned with specific learning outcomes that can be implemented in their program.
