Pearls of Wisdom, Part 1

Pearls of Wisdom, Part 1
An anonymous author recently asked in an online post, “I have a class of young soon to be EMTs, I was wondering if someone had a good motivational EMS related quote I could use in the classroom? You guys are the best.”

The answers were brilliant and useful for seasoned veterans of the profession as well.

Drew Grice

Skills can be taught. Compassion can’t. The best EMTs learn to treat the person before the problem, listen before they speak, and lead with humility instead of ego.

Logan Brooks

Every gravestone has a birth date and a death date. We aren’t here to remove the death date, just to try to make that dash between the 2 dates a little longer. Sometimes we can’t.

Michelle Mouring

My medical director told us going into our Exit Interview Oral Boards “if you are scared, put on a helmet and lick a window. That way you feel safe and get all of your stupid out. Sometimes you just have to do it scared.”

Michael L. Crawford

Your heart rate should always be lower than you patient's. Unless you are working a code.

Shayna Ridgway

“The best EMTs aren’t the loudest in the room. They’re the ones patients trust when everything goes wrong.”

“This job isn’t about lights and sirens. It’s about service when people are scared, hurt, and vulnerable.”

David Nonamaker

I tell this to every new EMT I train. We don't save lives, we prolong death. I turn your last 30 seconds into 30 minutes and get you to someone within those 30 minutes who can give you back the next 30 years.

Caysea Davis

High flow diesel is sometimes the best treatment. If it’s wet, sticky and not yours, don’t touch it.

Jeffrey Thomas

Emotional support is a part of patient care they don't test in EMS.

Denise Bjorge

“A naked trauma patient is a happy trauma patient”

Cassidy Hill

Always do your best because some day when it isn’t enough you’ll know there’s nothing you could have done better.

And my paramedic instructor always said “patients sometimes have the audacity to have more than one thing wrong with them.”

Dean Eicher

1. You are giving someone a chance that they would, otherwise, not have.  2. Don't be a dead hero.

EMS Attack Crew

Once you become complacent with someone else’s emergency, it’s time to move on.

Trent Wilson

Patients will always remember how well you treated them over the treatments you performed.

Allan J. Keddy

It’s not my job to save lives. That’s Gods. I just entertain the person till god makes up his mind.

Lawrence Lutz

You may not be the best medic/EMT, but go to work every day with the mindset of becoming the best.

Ben Harrison

Air goes in and out and blood goes round and round, any deviation of that is an issue but remember all bleeding stops… eventually.

James De Deckere

Be the partner you would like to have and treat everyone as if they are related to you, because they are. If you are not having fun, you are doing it wrong. Slow down, look, listen, especially driving. You can’t help anyone if you never get there.

Jacob Hudson

“Study, learn, practice and bang on your craft until you are the best emsp that ever existed while fully understanding you will never get there”

Tom Frederick

Use a quote from Yoda. Take the knowledge you received here and apply it to what you do. Pass on what you have learned from both success and failure. This will make you a better person and provider.

Kayla McMahan

Scene Safety is your safety it can always change, Protect ya’ neck. All bleeding stops eventually.

Jonathan King

You're going to get in trouble at some point. When it happens, make sure you're getting in trouble for doing the right thing.

Roxane Smith

Know when you don’t know. You don’t have to know everything as you’re just learning don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to admit you just don’t know.

Gareth Thomas

Don’t study to pass the test study for when you are the only thing between your patient and the grave.

Bob Clarke

Treat every patient as though they’re a relative, even the ones you don’t like. A patient may not recall the pre hospital treatment, but they will remember how they were treated.

Matt Brookey

Know what you know and know what you don’t know. Not meaning act like you know everything, it’s a call medical control and or another unit to get the help you need

Gabriel Host

The best medical practice is one that never stops learning

Bill Simmons

Remember that a career in EMS is not a sprint, it’s a grueling cross country marathon full of peaks and valleys, twists and turns.

Yes it can be very rewarding but equally challenging. Pace yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance if you feel lost or uncertain of which direction to go.

Larry Morse

Look at the patient, not the monitor or your phone. Treat the patient and the family.

Paul Cercy

How you train, will be how you respond. You don’t rise to the circumstance, you fall to your highest level of training.

Mark Carlson

First thing my paramedic instructor said... 'Remember, it's not your emergency'

Vickie Mahan Poole

People may not remember you but they will remember how you made them feel. Treat everyone how you would want them treating your mom, grandma or grandpa.

Leonard Zierler

You need to tell them that not every call goes by the book, you'll make mistakes learn from them and never stop learning, take training seriously and practice skills continually

Robert J. Buckley

Treat your patients like they are your Mom.

Daniel Wilkinson

Eat your fries first!!

Toni Petro

I think something important that never gets told is you can do everything right and your patient can still die. This is a wonderful field, but it's also a very heartbreaking field... You will be with people on the worst possible days of their lives. Remember this—they're not going to remember your name, but they will remember how you treated them always be kind... And respectful...

Bri Cole

Compassion first, ego last

Lisa Gaye Strack

The day that you think you know it all or have seen everything, is the day you need to quit, you will never stop learning, no matter what the call is, how simple a call may seem, you will always learn something!

Steven B. Schnaudt

Don’t EVER sacrifice your integrity or your work ethic for any person or organization.
